Monica Mercedes Martinez is an object maker with an interest in all media with ceramics playing an intrinsic role in her artistic practice. She approaches her art primarily as a three dimensional figurative artist and even as her practice evolves, her work continues to reference the body in some way. Currently the study of the concepts of identity has moved to the forefront of her research. This has greatly impacted her art as her exploration of the roots to who she is has taken her practice in exciting new directions. It has lead to work that is highly symbolic, experimental and that has developed elements of process based performance where the making becomes as important as the finished piece.
Monica Mercedes Martinez was a visiting artist in residence at the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemet, Hungary (September 2012) as well as at the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China (October 2012). She has received numerous awards and has also been nominated for the 2013 RBC Emerging Artist in Ceramics Award.
Monica Mercedes Martinez received her Bachelor of Fine Art from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2010 and completed her Master of Fine Art degree at the University of Manitoba in 2012.
