Ahlam Shudaiwa

I am from Yemen, born and raised. I came to Canada in 2003. My parents are both half Vietnamese and half Yemeni. As a child, I was brought up in a Vietnamese household, and  was exposed to Vietnamese music, philosophy and literature. Meanwhile, growing up in Yemen I learned Arabic calligraphy and poetry in school. Being mixed, I have never felt fully accepted nor fully belonged in neither society. Therefore, I am in a constant identity search. In my paintings, I explore and incorporate Middle Eastern and Asian elements and symbols to express my equal struggle and love for the both cultures, which made me who I am.
